Scholar's Notes:

"The brilliant [white hibiscus] bloom serves as a foil to the composed, opalescent countenance of the former First Lady. ". . . The iridescent palette was suggested by Patricia Nixon's aquamarine brocade dress, touched with violet and white. Placed against a thinly brushed veil of pale grays, sparing pinks, aqua, and turquoise, the figure emerges from an indefinite space, a creation of light from light. But the head is given volume and presence by the darker ground behind it and the shadow that passes over the proper left side of her face."
