| Scholar's Notes: |
"Mrs. Roosevelt, wife of President Theodore Roosevelt, posed for this formal-informal portrait in the colonial garden. (The South Portico in the background has been repositioned by the artist for pictorial effect.) . . . "Despite the black coat and splendid black feathered hat, the painting is filled with light, due not only to the extensive areas of white and the light underpaint but also to the sea green found in much of the picture--in the background, in the subject's eyes, and as a tint in the white of the bench. [Edith Roosevelt's] biographer felt that 'the pose characteristically combined informality with regality and the calm that was always Edith's most noted attribute.'" |
