Scholar's Notes:

"Taking the coastal sweep as his cue, Bricher emphasizes the spacious scene by choosing a canvas nearly twice as wide as high. Further, he chooses a low viewpoint so that one feels the tug of the tide and the weight of the water . . . . From this groundswell of surf and sliver of beach rises the gray-brown mass of Castle Rock at Nahant. It is near the point of a long peninsula off the coast near Lynn. The lighthouse on the right stands on the small island of Egg Rock. "Late afternoon shadow veils the eastern face of the rock, and a mood pensive tranquility pervades the scene, underscored by a tonal palette: gray, gray-white, gray-blue, gray-brown. . . . ". . .The presence of an elegantly dressed young woman, rowboats drawn up on the shore, and the pleasure yachts correctly suggest that Nahant was richly . . . inhabited."
