| Scholar's Notes: |
"A dramatic high sea is viewed from the rocky ledge of the coastline. These foreground rocks are brushed in solidly in an opaque brown. Between a film of weathery sky and a relatively quiet ebb tide of water at hand lie dark, dense surging waves that at several points burst over rocks into white spray. The white water seems to be expressed entirely by untouched paper. Elsewhere, Homer confines himself to grays, thin light strokes toward the bottom, heavier overlays in the dark cresting waves, and in the sky a . . . washing together of grays . . . . "The painting is extremely free, with no apparent underdrawing, and it exhibits a variety of brushstrokes." |
