| Scholar's Notes: |
"The massive cliff and its shadow, painted in . . . muted and mellow tones . . . occupies perhaps 40 percent of the picture plane and projects the monumental permanence of nature. This great calm form, wrapped by the sky is . . . carefully designed . . . . ". . . [T]he brightness of the sky is tempered by the pink tones of late afternoon and their reflections on the quiet Hudson. . . . In the boat lying silently in the cove at the foot of the escarpment a man, barely noticeable, sits motionless. In the sailboat at the left a sailor is even less apparent, but the irregular patch of the partially furled sail has its own liveliness, serving as an effective echo of the bare rocky outcrop at the upper right of the palisades." |
