Scholar's Notes:

"This rare depiction of a formal reception in the East Room of the White House during the 1860s represents not an actual one but an imaginary one. Rothermel brings together many important persons--statesmen, soldiers, and civilians--who might have attended such a gathering, though they would not all have attended the same event. 'Republican Court' refers not only to the political party but to the American Republic. . . . "Rothermel's gathering is divided by the great chandelier, with the emphasis on the right half. There a bright cluster of gowns frames the dark figures of President Lincoln and of General Grant, who presents his wife. To the President's left, Mary Todd Lincoln touches her fan to the shoulder of the corpulent Gen. Winfield Scott, who is unresponsive. In fact, Scott was dead (May 29, 1866, as the broadside for the engraving duly noted.. "In the left half the dominant foreground figures include the seated statesman and orator Edward Everett (who had died on January 15, 1865 . . .) and the standing Secretary of State William Seward; the red-haired Gen. William T. Sherman stands between and beyond them. In the center the man nearest the chandelier is Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase."
