| Scholar's Notes: |
"Spring in the Valley [was] probably painted near Chester, Vermont . . . . From a sloping meadow we look down and across a tranquil valley, . . . framed with farm buildings and rising hills and backed with the benevolent shape of the humpback mountain. . . . "Above the valley the robin's-egg blue sky and windblown clouds amplify the mood of quiet elation. . . . The still unfolding season is seen with a tree in pink and white blossom in the left foreground (the white is the exposed right primer), balanced by an undefined burst of white at the right edge." |
